Corwin Butterworth Custom Furniture

about corwin

I began my professional life as a painter, but quickly found that it was too difficult to make a living selling my paintings. So, in 1998, I decided to go into woodworking. My career as a woodworker began upon my completion of a two week continuing education class at the Rhode Island School of Design when the teacher, Barry Sumrall, asked me to work with him in his cabinet making shop. That began seven years of on again/off again work on various projects with Mr Sumrall. In that span, I also worked for furniture maker Philip Beauchemin and boatmaker Henry Elliot. In the winter of ‘99/‘00, I took a three month intensive furniture-making course at the Center for Furniture and Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine where I studied with such furniture luminaries as Christian Becksvoort, Peter Korn, John McAlevey and British furniture maker Andrew Garten. For the past five years, I’ve been working in my own shop, making custom designed, hardwood furniture on a commission basis.
